An AI engineer builds products and internal tools on top of large language models. The work is less about training models from scratch and more about using them well: connecting models to data and tools, measuring whether the output is good, and making the result safe and reliable enough to ship.
More and more of the role also means working with AI coding agents: giving them clear instructions, letting them act on real code and systems, and checking what they did before it reaches production.
What you will do
- Build LLM features with model APIs (such as Anthropic or OpenAI) and open-source models.
- Build retrieval-augmented generation: chunking, embeddings, vector search and ranking.
- Design agent workflows and tool use, and the guardrails around them.
- Write evaluations and benchmarks to measure quality, cost and latency, and compare models.
- Defend against prompt injection and other ways untrusted input can steer a model.
- Integrate AI into existing services and APIs, and run them in production.
What we look for
- Backend software experience, usually in Python, with real production work.
- Hands-on use of LLM APIs, prompt and context engineering, and RAG.
- Practical experience directing AI coding agents and reviewing their output critically.
- Understanding of how to evaluate a model or prompt change with data rather than impressions.
- Linux, Git and cloud fundamentals.
Nice to have
- Fine-tuning open-source models and serving them.
- Classical machine learning (regression, tree-based models) and statistics.
- Streaming or real-time systems, and GPU infrastructure.
About this mock test
One hour on a real Linux machine, in a terminal in your browser. You direct an AI agent to fix a crashing API and check its work, then answer short written questions on retrieval, prompt injection and evaluating models.
This is practice. There is no job at the end of it. It is the same interview format employers run on EasyEnv, so you can measure yourself against what companies hiring for this role ask for, and see where you need more work.
Applying needs a free EasyEnv account, so the company knows who applied and you can follow your application. The interview runs on a real machine, so it needs a desktop browser.
